-Alcohol didn’t create Al Capone, the prohibition of it did
Arresting one small drug dealer doesn’t stop the supply.
-Money is put into the war on drugs but what does it actually do?
-Spraying cocaine fields in Columbia
-There are unintended outcomes of banning drugs
-Lots of property crime is done by people trying to get money for drugs
-Stress on the judicial system
-Drug laws have negatively affected the public’s view on police
-Racist implications and the judicial system reinforces this
-there isn’t a correlation between death tolls and how much they take off the streets.
what 5 things do criminal courts do?
- decide if people stay in custody while their case is dealt with
- is a person guilty v not
- impose sentence
- hear appeals from lower courts
- interpret the charter/ constitution
