Q

sensing sound

A

pure tone: simple sound wave that consist of regularly alternating regions of higher and lower air pressure, radiating outword in all directions from the source

dimensions of auditory perception: frequency, amplitude, complexity

frequency: repetition rate of a sound wave that depends on how often the peak in air pressure passes the ear or microphone, measured in cycles per second, or Hz, perceived as the pitch, how high or low a sound is

amplitude: intensity, relative to the threshold for human hearing (0 dB)
loudness is the perception of a sound’s intensity

complexity of sound waves, or mixture of frequencies, influences perception of timbre: quality of sound that allows you to dinsting two sources with same pitch and loudness
