mind-body dualism
the mind is a spiritual entity that is not affected by physical laws and causal factors from the rest of the body/natural world
- cannot be studies with traditional sceicne
monism
the mind is a product of the physical events that affect the body (e.g. chemical rxns in our brain produce emotions)
- can be studied with a science perspective
what is the opposite of mind-body dualism
monism
british empiricism
all ideas/knowledge are gained empirically (through senses/observation)
more effective to understand than with only reason (may be misleading susceptible to errors)
localization of function
specific brain regions mediate particular behaviours/experiences (e.g. back brain dmg -> visual impairment)
pyschophysics
how perceptual experiences related to physical stimuli (e.g. loudness, intensity)
Darwin’s theory of evolution
the mind is not a spiritual entity, but rather the product of evolution (adaptation, mutation)
