Midterm 2 Flashcards
Stress
-Emphasis on PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSE (arousal)
Emotion
- PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGICAL REACTION
- Emphasis on INTERPRETATION of situation
- “subjective”
Anxiety
- An Emotion
- Emphasis on PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSE + SUBJECTIVE INTERPRETATION
Key points of measuring anxiety:
- There are STATE and TRAIT measures of anxiety
2. There are UNIDIMENSIONAL and MULTIDIMENSIONAL
Multidimensional Anxiety Theory
Independent relationship (somatic + cognitive)
Catastrophe Theory
- DEPENDENT theory
- Cognitive and soamtic work together to influence performance
- remember 3D picture*
Directionality Theory
-Individual’s perception of anxiety “intensity”
Reversal Theory
Dominance of TELIC (state of relaxation/calm) and PARATELIC (excitement) personality trait
Emotions (mood + emotion chapter)
- A response to meaning of our world around us
- Lasts secs, mins, hours
Moods
- Accumulation of our emotions that form a mindset
- Lasts weeks and months
Zone of Optimal Functioning Theory
-Individual’s zone of optimal performance
Systematic Desensitization
Step 1: RANK anxiety producing situations
Step 2: LEARN to cope MENTALLY
Step 3: TRANSFER into performance
Why does imagery work sometimes but not other times?
- Cognitive load - imagery more effective w/high cognition load tasks
- Imagery vs physical practice - combo is better in terms of learning/retention
- Skill level - Higher skilled performers benefit more from imagery
- Amount of mental practice - Pre or during execution, too long can disrupt performance
