The nature of interpersonal communication
Interpersonal commincation refers to a type of communication that occurs between interdepend individuals is inherently relational exists on a continuum involves bith verbal and non nonverbal messages exists in varied forms and is best viewed as a transational process involving choices
The elements of interpersonal communication
Source receiver, encoding-decoding , mesages (metamesaages, feedback and feedword) chanel , noise( physical, physiological, paychological and semantic) context (physical, social paychological, temporal and cultural)
Principles of interpersonal communication
Purposeful we learn, relate , influence , play and help
A package of signals that usually reinforce but may also contradict one another
A combination of content and relationship messages we communicate about objects and events in the world bit also anout relationship betwene sources and receivers

Inevitable ( comm will happen whether we want it or not)

Listen to both verbal and non verbale feedback use the cues to adjust your messages

Use feedforward when you feel your listener needs background or when you want toneasr into a particular topid such as bad news

Asses your channel options face to face concersation vs email or voicemail before communicating important messages
Noise management
Reduce physical, physiological, psychological and semantic noicsr as best yoy fan use repetetion and restatement when in doubt ask wheither youre being clear
Mindfulness
Create and recreate categories be open to new information and points of view avoid relying too heavily on first impressions and think before you act
Purposes
Adjust your interpersonal communication strategies on the basis of your specific purpose
Packaging
Make your verbal and non verbal messages consistent inconsistensies often create uncertainty and misunderstanding

Listen to both the content and the relationship aspects of messages distinguish between them

Assess comm options before communicating in loght of inevitability irreversibility and unrepeatability
