What is a conservative?
An American whose political beliefs are reduced govt spending, traditional moral values, and strong national defenses.
What is a liberal?
An American who values cultural diversity, government programs, public intervention within the economy, and individuals rights to a lifestyle based on their values.
What is an Institution?
The organization, norms, and rules that structure a government and public action. An example would be the supreme court or department of homeland security.
What is federalism?
The balancing act between the different levels of government (Federal, state, local, etc.)
What are checks and balances?
The way the different branches of government keep one part of the government from having too much power.
What is negative and positive liberty, and the difference between the two?
Positive liberty is the idea that individuals should be provided with a base level of necessities so they can pursue their own goals. Negative liberty is the idea that individuals should not be interfered with at all so they have complete freedom to pursue their goals.
What is equal opportunity?
The idea that each American has an equal opportunity to influence politics and achieve financial success.
What is equal outcome?
The idea that citizens should have roughly equal economic success.
What is social equality?
When all individuals have the same status in a society.
What is political equality?
When all individuals have the same political rights and opportunities.
What is an unfunded mandate?
A federal legislation that’s forced onto a state/area without federal funding to run it.
What’s the difference between civil liberties and civil rights?
Civil liberties RESTRICT government action to protect individual rights, civil rights REQUIRE government action to protect individual rights.
What is selective incorporation?
When protections from the bill of rights are used one at a time, instead of an entire amendment.
What’s the difference between judicial rule and judicial standard?
Judicial rule is a hard set line on what is allowed and what is not (black and white). Judicial standard is a guiding line on what is legal and what’s not (gray area that can be interpreted).
What is exclusionary rule?
Evidence that is obtained illegally may not be used in trial.
What are laboratories of democracy?
States within a federal country that can serve as a laboratory when testing a policy.
