Midgut & Hindgut Flashcards
What are the components of midgut
Jejunum and ileum
Cecum
Ascending colon
Transverse colon (up to left colic flexure)
Arterial Supply of midgut
Superior mesenteric artery
Venous drainage of midgut
Superior Mesenteric Vein
Sympathetic innervation of midgut
Lesser Splanchnic Nerve levels T10-T11
Where does the sympathetic innervation of midgut synapse at?
Superior Mesenteric Ganglion
Parasympathetic Innervation of midgut
Vagus Nerve
Why is the small intestine so long?
The length increases the time it takes for substances to pass through which increases time for absorption
Pyloric Sphincter
Circular skeletal muscle that controls the movement of substances into duodenum
Ileocecal sphincter
Circular skeletal muscle that controls the movement of substances into the cecum
What are circular folds?
Large ridges of mucosa
What do circular folds do?
slows movement of substances in the small intestine
- increases chance of absorption
What are villi?
Finger like projections of the mucosa
- more cells for absorption of nutrients
- contains an artery, vein, and lacteal
What are microvilli?
projections of the cell membrane
- larger surface for absorption
Function of the large intestine
Propulsion and defecation
What are haustra?
Pouches of the colon that are created by longitudinal strips of smooth muscle the taeniae coli
