Midface Trauma Flashcards
Imaging to detect damage to major vessels.
Angiography
Provides the best images of head and facial trauma.
CT
Gold standard for diagnosing midfacial injuries.
CT
Type of fixation where you use bone plates and screws to hold the fracture together.
Internal fixation
Fracture of just the tooth-bearing area
Le Fort I
Pyramidal fracture that includes the nose and orbits.
Le Fort II
Craniofacial dysfunction fracture that includes the lateral orbit and zygomatic arch.
Le Fort III
Blood supply of the nose.
From BOTH internal and external carotid.
Plexus in the nose.
Kisselbalch’s
Open or closed reduction for nasal fractures?
CLOSED!
How to tx a hematoma.
Poke a hole in it and let drain.
In this sinus fracture, a depressed fracture may impinge on the brain, impede sinus drainage, and be associated with a significant cosmetic defect.
Frontal sinus fracture
Tx if sinus drainage is impaired.
Ablation of the sinus (remove the sinus).
Used to ablate the frontal sinus.
Belly button
Tx for hyphema.
None- just wait for it to be resorbed.
Blood pooling in the anterior chamber of the eye.
Hyphema
Functional deficits associated with orbital blowout
1) Diploia (double vision)
2) Hyphema (Blood pooling in anterior chamber of the eye).
This muscle is trapped in orbital blowouts, so the person can’t look up.
Inferior
Another name for zygomatic arch fracture.
“Gull wing” fracture
Vessel and nerve to be aware of when doing surgery for a fractured zygomatic arch.
Superficial temporal artery
and
Facial Nerve
Quadripod fracture
ZMC (Zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture)
Components of ZMC fracture:
1) Zygomatic arch
2) Maxilla
3) Inferior orbit
4) Lateral orbit
Infraorbital anesthesia is seen with this fracture.
ZMC Fracture
Can impede growth.
Titanium plates
This fracture may involve the medial canthi and must consider nasolacrimal drainage.
Naso-Orbital-Ethmoid
