Q

Describe the major achievement of Scholasticism.

A

the ability to prove that god exists through logic and reason. this allowed for great expansion of Christianity and allowed for conversion of non-Christians who were adamant that god was non-existent. It reconciled two world views. Specifically the Greco Roman and Judeo Christian. Thomas Aquinas used it to prove the existence of the god of Israel with his five logically structured arguments for the existence of god. Scholasticism planted the seed for the later cultural developments of classical human renaissance

Q

List and describe the major differences between Romanesque and Gothic Cathedrals.

A

gothic architecture relied on points and sharp edges for support. this meant that they didn’t rely on as many pillars for structural support and there was a lot more space inside. flying buttresses on the outside also allowed for more space on the inside. walls of gothic cathedrals would have many stained glass windows as the walls did not have to be as thick and they could be replaced with thin glass.
