Muscle Changes in Middle age

A

Strength declines 5% after 30

A
  1. Decreased number of sensory cells (40% reduction in hair cells) and nerve fibers in the PNS (36% in adults over 70)
  2. Neural changes possible in the vestibular nerve
  3. Deterioration in central vestibular integrative functions —>impaired balance
    - increased threshold of excitation of vestibular nuclei
    - vestibular becomes unreliable when visual and proprioceptive input conflicts

Q

What is the post-menopause stage? What are important things to remember as a PT during this period?

A

Signals the end of the female reproductive years because ovaries produce low levels of estrogen and progesterone so no longer ovulate or menstruate.

Some symptoms may persist for many years but tend to dissipate. Most symptoms can be managed with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and lifestyle modifications. However, for severe symptoms, hormone replacement therapy and other meds can be used.

***Females are at increased risk of heart disease and osteoporosis due to decreased estrogen!!

17
Q

What is andropause and its 7 signs?
