Midbrain Flashcards
What are the features of the midbrain?
Reticular formation
What is the role of the reticular formation?
The reticular formation helps us to selectively focus our attention and alertness, and controls our physiological arousal.
What do side branches do to the reticular formation?
send its own impulses up towards the cortex, arousing it to a stage of alertness and activity.
state of conscious awareness.
It also plays a role in regulating the ANS function (Automatic Nervous System).
What is the reticular formation referred to?
The brain’s arousal centre
How do anaesthetics affect brain’s arousal centre?
Suppress the role of the reticular formation hence people cant recall sensations and perceptions.
