Memory Flashcards
What is sensory memory?
They come from the five senses: hearing, vision, touch, smell, and taste
How do the sensory memory gather information?
Sensory memory gathers information via senses through transduction. Transduction consists of receptor cell activity that alters memories into a form of information that the brain can process.
Is sensory memory conscious or unconscious and how long do they last?
Unconscious, very short time
Key function of sensory memory
It acts as a filter, by focusing on what’s important, and forgetting what is unnecessary.
What is working memory?
A memory that stores information during the completion of cognitive tasks, such as comprehension, problem solving, reasoning, and learning.
What does the working memory do?
- selection of information
- method of processing
- deciding whether to transfer it to long term memory or forget it
What are the parts of working memory?
Auditory loop - where auditory information is processed
visual-spatial check pad- where visual information is processed
What are the categories of long term memory
Explicit memory
Implicit memory
What is explicit memory?
Semantic (words)
Episodic (events)
What is implicit memory?
Procedural memory - how to ride a bike
Priming - previous experience influence your interpretation)
What type of information is part of long term memory?
declaration (semantic and episodic)
procedural (how to do something)
imagery ( mental images)
