Actual Grace
God’s free gift to help us choose the good and avoid evil
Sanctifying Grace (Baptized people)
the free and unmerited favor of God given through the sacraments. This heals human nature wounded by sin giving man a share in the divine life infused into the soul by the Holy Spirit to heal from sin and sanctify.
Habitual Grace
Is an infused gift of the Holy Spirit by which a person receives the divine life of God in one’s soul. Three Theological Virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity. Enables us to live as a true disciple of Christ.
Efficacious looks like: effector or effective
signs of the actions of God that have an effect and create a result.
Form
words or spiritual signs of the sacraments
Matter
material or physical signs of the sacrament
Minister
the one who administers the sacrament
Sacrament
An efficacious sign of grace, instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church, by which Divine life is dispensed through the work of the Holy Spirit. There are 7 sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Penance or Confession, Marriage, Holy Orders, and Anointing or the Sick. Signs of grace, instituted by Christ entrusted to the Church.
Sacramental character
the mark on our soul
Ex Opere Operato
which means in Latin “from the work done”. It refers to the fact that the sacraments confer grace when the sign is validly effected – not as the result of activity on the part of the recipient but by the power and promise of God.
Concupiscence
strong desire for bodily needs. Result of Original Sin. Inclination to Sin. Inordinate- extreme or out-of-control physical desires
Charism
Is a unique gift from God that is to be shared. A specific gift or grace of the Holy Spirit which directly or indirectly benefits the Church, given in order to help a person live out the Christian life.
Covenant
a sacred bond of love between God and His people
(Biblical) Type
something or someone in the Old Testament, which prefigures or foreshadows, someone or something in the New Testament
Typology
the study of Biblical Types.
Sacrilege
Disrespecting something holy or an extreme irreverence toward God, the Sacraments, sacred objects, etc.
Transforming
causing a change; makes us new
Testament
convent=a sacred bong between God and His people or between two parties with God. Most important convent (for women): Marriage
Ch 1 Baptism:
Actual Sin
any sin that a Christian commits of his or her own free will
Affusion
the practice of baptizing a person by pouring water over their head
Immersion (to immerge (dunking))
method of baptizing where the whole person is submerged in water.
Baptism of Desire
for those who strive to serve God as best they can or are able to but die before they are baptized. So, instead their DESIRE to be baptized assures them the salvation that they were not able to receive sacramentally. Those who wanted or desired to be baptized before they died but were not able to receive sacramentally because they died before being baptized.
Baptism of Blood
one who suffers death for the sake of the Faith but were not baptized but are ‘baptized’ by his or her own death for and with Christ.
Catechumen
Greek “one being instructed”; new covert being instructed in the Christian Faith before Baptism
Justification
being made right (righteous) with God. Justified with God; a free and undeserved gift of God through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ
Trinitarian Formula
“(Name), I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” part of the form used in the Sacrament of Baptism
Sponsor
what Godparents are called at Confirmation and Baptism
Godparent
someone who sponsors a person, baby, at Baptism.
Sacraments of Initiation
the three primary sacraments, on which the Crest of our life as Christians depends on
Original Sin
the tendency to sin which is part of us as people being human. Given to us from Adam and Eve in the Fall from Grace
Domestic Church
the home of a Christian, Catholic, family. It’s called this because this is where the parents raise their child or children within the teachings of the Faith that the child or children was Baptized in.
Theological Virtues
gifts of grace from God, in which the object of the virtues-what the practice aims at- is God Himself. There are 3 Theological Virtues: faith, hope, love or charity
Ch 2 Confirmation:
Chrism
Greek for “anointing”. A consecrated mix of olive oil and balsam (spices), signifying the gift of the Holy Spirit, which has been blessed by a Bishop and is used in the administration of the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders.
Chrism Mass
The Mass at which a bishop consecrates the Sacred Chrism (mixture of oil and balsam) and blesses the Oil of Catechumens and the Oil of the Sick, to be used for liturgical anointings. It is also when the Bishop blesses all of the Chrism, oil, that is going to be given out to all of the parishes in the diocese that the Bishop oversees. In MD, the Chrism Mass takes place at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. It takes place ONCE a year.
Chrismation
The act of anointing. The use of chrism for anointing in the administration of the sacraments and in the blessings of a person or things.
Seal
a permanent mark which is imprinted on the soul by the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders
