Micturition Flashcards
Triggered by the peripheral nervous system under the control of the central nervous system
Micturition
Most important facilitative center above the spinal cord
-FINAL COMMON PATHWAY FOR ALL BLADDER MOTOR NEURONS
PONTINE-MESENCEPHALIC GRAY MATTER OF THE BRAINSTEM
(Aka pontine micturition center)
transection of the tracts below the pontine-mesencephalic gray matter of the brainstem
disturbed bladder emptying
transection of the tracts above the pontine-mesencephalic gray matter of the brainstem
detrusor overactivity
serves as a major center for coordinating pelvic floor relaxation and the rate, force, and range of detrusor contractions
cerebellum
Above this level =
cerebral cortex and related structures exert inhibitory influences on the micturition reflex
bladder and urethra store urine without pain until a socially acceptable time and place arises, at which point voiding occurs in a coordinated and complete fashion
Normal lower urinary tract
Lower urinary tract disorders:
- disorders of storage (urinary incontinence)
- emptying (urinary hesitancy and retention)
- sensation (urgency or pain)
disorders of storage
urinary incontinence
disorders of emptying
urinary hesitancy and retention
disorders of sensation
urgency or pain
any involuntary leakage of urine
incontinence (symptom)
`
observation of involunatry leakage from the urethra, synchronous with exertion/effort, or sneezing or coughing
stress urinary incontinence-sign
involuntary loss of urine associated with urgency and also with effort or physical exertion or on sneezing or coughing
mixed incontinence
number of voids per day, from waking in the morning until falling asleep at night
frequency
