Microtrauma Flashcards
Forces Causing Overuse
- Frictional
- Tractional
- Cycle Loading
Frictional Forces
This micro traumatic force causes soft tissue inflammation such as tendonitis and bursitis which will lead to a loss of function (pain, weakness)
Tractional Forces
These micro traumatic forces cause soft tissue inflammation such as Plantar Fasciitis or boney injury such as Osgood Schlatter’s Disease
Tendonitis
- Inflammation and degenerative changes in the tendon or the musculotendinous junction
- Result of repeated micro trauma and circulatory disturbances in the tendon
- Signs and Symptoms
- Pain and point tenderness over the tendon
- Local thickening of the tendon
Tendonitis: Phase 1
Symptoms of pain and discomfort following activity with no performance disability
Tendonitis: Phase 2
Symptoms during and following activity initially causing no performance disability but progressing to varying degrees of disability
Tendonitis: Phase 3
Symptoms during and after activity with persistent performance disabilities
Tendonitis: Phase 4
Symptoms all the time
Etiology of Tendonitis
Excessive overuse of the tendon
Direct trauma to the tendon
Excessive friction over the tendon
Bursitis
Inflammation of a bursa (small sac containing synovial fluid) commonly caused by repetitive movement and frictional forces leading to pain and swelling
Etiology of Bursitis
Chronic Irritation
Direct Trauma
Infection
Tenosynovitis
Inflammation of the tendon, as well as the fluid-filled sheath around the tendon (called the synovium)
- Symptoms
- Pain, swelling and difficulty moving the particular joint where the tendon inflammation occurs
Capsulitis
Chronic inflammation of the joint capsule
Synovitis
Inflammation of the membrane lining the joint
