Microstructure of the Female Reproductive System Flashcards
CL? H? F? M? L?

CL = Corpus Luteum
H = Hilus
F = Follicles
M = Medulla (lots of blood vessels)
L = Ligament
What arrests primary oocyte in meiosis I

by 7th month of fetal development, single layer of flattened follicular cells surround primary oocyte; this encapsulation arrests the first meiotic division until puberty
What type of epithelium is found in follicular cells

simple cuboidal epithelium
NB: also called germinal epithelium; named so because originally thought to give rise to germ cells
What kind of epithelium is found lining the ovaries
simple cuboidal epithelium that is continuous with meothelial lining of peritoneal cavity; egg released directly into peritoneal cavity before being swept up by fimbrae
NB: mesothelial lining = simple squamous epithelium; membrane that forms lining of several body cavities (pleura, peritoneum, pericardium)
vagina
Latin, “sheath, scabbard”
relationship between follicular cells and granulosa
Flattened follicular cells surrounding primary follicle are changing to granulosa cells (simple cuboidal)
Green arrow? Blue arrows?

Green = primordial follicle (surrounded by flattened follicular cells)
Blue = primary follicle
Green arrows? Blue arrow?

Green = primordial follicle (flattened follicular cells surround it)
Blue = primary follicle
