Microscopy Flashcards
How does a Light Microscope work?
It uses light and lenses to form an image of a specimen and magnify it.
What does a light microscope allow us to see?
Individual cells, large subcellular structures like Nuclei
How does an Electron Microscope work?
They use Electrons instead of light to form an image.
Why would somebody use an Electron microscope over a Light Microscope?
Electron microscopes have a higher magnification, higher resolution and they also let the user see smaller things in more detail
Give an example of what an Electron Microscope would be used to observe?
Internal structures of Mitochondria and Chloroplasts, Ribosomes or plasmids.
What is the formula for magnification?
Magnification = image size ÷ real size
List the steps needed to look at a specimen under a Light Microscope
- Put specimen on a Microscope slide
- Add a drop of water to the middle of a clean slide
- Place cells on to the water on slide
- Add a drop of iodine solution
- Place a cover slip on top
What is a slide?
A strip of clear glass or plastic into which a specimen is mounted
