Cells Flashcards
What are the two types of Cells?
Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic
Eukaryotic cells are…
Complex and include all Animal and Plant cells
Prokaryotic cells are…
Smaller and simpler than Eukaryotes e.g. Bacteria
What are Eukaryotes?
Organisms made up of Eukaryotic cells
What is a Prokaryote?
A Prokaryotic cell (single celled Organism)
Name all 5 subcellular structures in an Animal cell
Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Cell Membrane, Mitochondria, Ribosomes
Name all the 3 subcellular structures plant cells have that animal cells don’t
Rigid Cell wall, Permanent Vacuole, Chloroplasts
What is the purpose of the Nucleus?
It contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell
What is the purpose of Cytoplasm?
Gel-like substance where most of the chemical reactions happened. They also contain enzymes that control chemical reactions
What is the purpose of the Cell Membrane?
Holds the cell together and controls what goes in and out
What is the purpose of Mitochondria?
They are where most reactions for aerobic respiration take place.
Why does the body respire?
To transfer energy that cells need to work
What is the purpose of Ribosomes?
Where proteins are made in the cell
What is the purpose of Rigid Cell Wall?
Made of Cellulose and supports and strengthens cell
What is the purpose of a Permanent Vacuole?
Contains cell sap which is a weak solution of sugar and salts
