microscopy Flashcards
learn it
what is a eukaryotic cell
a cell with membrane bound cell organelles and in which the genetic material is enclosed in the nucleus.
which lens determine the total magnification and resolution of a light microscope
the eyepiece and the objective lens
difference between magnification and resolution
magnification is how much larger an image is than real life whereas resolution is the ability to distinguish between 2 adjacent indivisual points as seperate
give an example of a eukaryotic cell
any plant, animal, fungal or protist cell.
what kinds of specimen can be viewed under a light microscope?
dead or living whole cells, tissues or microorganisms.
What are specimens tagged with, prior to viewing with a laser confocal microscope
Fluorescent tags
Give an advantage of light microscopes
Cheap, easy to use, can view live specimen, lightweight
why do specimens need to be stained?
to make them visible and to highlight distinguish between the cell structures
what are the pros and cons of an electron microscope?
pros: very high magnification and excellent resolution
cons: specimen needs to be dead, it is very large, expensive and requires great skill and training to use.
what are the maximum magnifications of microscopes
light microscope: x1500
TEM: x 1 000 000
SEM: x500 000
what are the max resolutions of microscopes?
light microscope: 200 nm
TEM: 0.2 nm
SEM: 10nm
