Cell Cytoskeleton Flashcards
1
Q
What is the cytoskeleton
A
It is a network of protein threads that run through the cytoplasm
2
Q
In eukaryotic cells the protein threads consist of?
A
Microfilaments and microtubules.
3
Q
What are the 5 main functions of the cytoskeleton?
A
- Strengthens the cell and maintains the cell shape.
- It supports the organelles keeping them in place.
- Contracts (shortens) to transport mRNA, vesicles, lysosomes and chromatids (during cell division)
- It allows the cilia or the whole cell to move.
- It can cause the cell to change shape.
4
Q
What motor protein causes vesicles to be dragged along microtubules?
A
Kinesin
5
Q
What does the motor protein- kinesin do?
A
It drags the vesicles along the microtubules
