Microscopy Flashcards
what are microscopes used for
let us see things that we cannot see with the naked eye
what is a light microscope
light microscopes use light and lenses to form an image of a specimen and magnify it. they let us see individual cells and large subcellular structures like nuclei
what is an electron microscope
they use electrons instead of light to form an image.
they have a much higher magnification than a light microscope
also have a higher resolution
they let us see much smaller things in more detail.
how do you calculate magification
magnification = image size / real size
an onion cell is viewed under a microscope with x100 magnification. the image of the cell is 7.5mm wide what is the real width of the onion cell. give you answer in micrometers
7.5 / 100 = 0.075mm
0.075 = 75 micrometres
