diffusion Flashcards
what is diffusion
is the spreading out of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
where does diffusion usually happen
happens in both solutions and gases - that is because the particles in these substances are free to move about randomly
what happens if the temperature is high
give a faster diffusion rate because the particles have more energy, so move around faster
what kind of molecules can diffuse through cell membranes
small molecules such as water, glucose and oxygen
however big molecules such as starch and protein cannot fit through the membrane
what happens if the surface area of the membrane is high
the higher the surface area the faster the diffusion rate, because more particles can pass through at once
