Microscopy Flashcards
Function of microscope.
Enlarge the image of objects too small to be seen by the naked eyes.
Base of microscope
Bottom of microscope, for support.
Eyepiece (Ocular lens)
To see the image of specimen.
Body tube
Connect eyepiece to the objective lenses.
Revolving nosepiece
Holds 2 or more objective lenses AND can rotated to easily change power.
Stage
- flat platform
- place the slides.
Iris/ diaphragm
controls the light going through the aperture.
Condenser
Collect and focus the light from illuminator to the specimen.
Objective lenses
-
gathers light from specimen
-** focused to produce real image** that is seen on the ocular lenses. - increase the magnification of the specimen.
Stage clips
hold the slide in place.
Light
function of light in microscope.
provide light to view specimen.
Coarse adjustment knob
- large, round knob
- used for focusing the specimen
Fine adjustment knob
- small, round knob
- to fine-tune the focus of your specimen.
Coaxial stage controls (stage controls)
Allow the slide to move to right and left, back and forth.
Why there is a concave slide
Designed to hold few drops of liquid.
How immersion oil increses the resolving power of microscope?
By replacing the air gap between the immersion objective lens and cover glass with a high refractive index medium and reducing light refraction.
Definition of Magnification
Ratio of an object’s size to its real size.
Meaning of Resolution
A measure of the clarity of the image.
The amount of fine detail that can be seen.
What is Enhanced resolution?
Ability to observe 2 nearby objects as distinct objects.
