Q

What are found in both in the compound and dissecting microscopes. State their functions

A

Ocular Lens: The lens located inside the eye pieces that is used to magnify a specimen. On binocular microscopes, the distance between the two eyepieces containing the ocular lens should be adjusted by each user.
Objective Lens: a series of lenses used to magnify a specimen located on the nosepiece just above the stage
Arm: Used for a hand grip when carrying the instrument; the other hand should be placed under the base.
Coarse Focus Knob: Roughly focuses the specimen by changing the distance between the objective lens and specimen
Light Source: Emits light onto the specimen
Blue Filter: Increases the resolution by reducing the wavelength of light

Q

What are the components of a compound microscope

A

Mechanical stage: large, flat surface that supports the slide or specimen over the hole that admits light from below. It also allows for movement of the slide using the mechanical stage knobs.
Mechanical stage knobs: moves the slide around the stage knobs.
Fine Course Knob: Sharply focuses the specimen by changing the distance between the objective lens and specimen very precisely.
