Cell 101 Flashcards
Plasma membrane
Regulates what enters and leaves cell
Cytoplasm
Everything inside (except the nucleus)
Cytosol
Internal fluid in the cell
Organelles
Recognizable compartments that carry out particular functions
Cytoskeleton
An internal framework of proteins fibers and tubes
2 fundamental cell types
Prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells
True or False prokaryotic cells are more successful
True
What is the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic?
Prokaryotic has no nucleus or big organelles with membrane. Relatively small.
Eukaryotic have a nucleus and membrane covered organelles. bigger than prokaryotic
What are the 3 things found in the cellular membrane?
- phospholipids
- cholesterol
- proteins
Describe phospholipids (function and characteristic)
Bilayer forms the basis of the membrane and not very permeable
Why is it vital for cholesterol to maintain the right fluidity in phospholipids.
Fluidity is important because the wrong types of cells may cross the membrane if the fluidity is incorrect.
Name 3 locations where proteins may be present in the phospholipids bilayer and describe it.
Integral proteins: extend thru both sides
Peripheral proteins: only on one side
Floating around in membrane
What are the 3 functions of proteins in the phospholipids bilayer?
Transport: allow specific molecules to cross
Enzymes carry out reactions
Receptor: for the hormones
Name five things that can cross the selectively permeable membrane?
Small non polar molecules
Some bigger lipids
Oxygen
Carbon dioxide
