Microscopes and Magnification Flashcards
What is magnification?
How many times bigger the image size is compared to the actual size
What is the resolution?
The ability to determine between 2 separate points
What is a stain used for?
To highlight the organelles and add contrast
What is the equation for magnification?
Actual size x Magnification = Image size
What are specimen coated with?
A thin layer of metal: Gold, platinum or tungsten
What is a Transmission Electron Microscope?
Shoots a beam of electrons at thin slice of a sample. Gives high resolution at a thin section and its good for learning about how components inside a cell are structured internally
What is a Scanning electron microscope?
It uses a focused beam of high energy electrons which reflect off the surface of structures and gives a 3D image.
Why do electron microscopes require a vacuum?
Air particles would interfere with the beam of electrons so the specimen must always be dead
