Microscopes Flashcards
light microscope features
uses beams of light to form an image as some of the light is absorbed by dense structures
adv of light microscopes
can view living specimens and use different stains like methyl blue or iodine
dis of light microscopes
visible light has a long wavelength, giving a low resolution
lower useable magnification because of the low resolution
electron microscope features
a beam of electrons creates the image as the denser parts of the structures absorbs more electrons
has two types
creates black and white images
SEM (scanning)
forms 3D images
specimen is coated in metal
high magnification but lower than TEM
TEM (transmission)
forms 2D images
higher magnification
laser scanning confocal (LSC)
a laser scans across the specimen
it scans the different depth to view different layers in the specimen
layers can then form the 3D images
adv of LSC
higher resolution than optical microscopes
can view living specimens and see movement
can focus at different depths
3D composite images formed
dis of LSC
lower resolution than electron microscopes
magnification
how many times larger an image is compared to the actual size
resolution
the smallest distance apart where two objects are seen as separate
the smaller the distance, the higher the resolution
