Microscopes Flashcards
When were microscopes invented and by who?
Microscopes were invented at the end of the 16th century by Dutch spectacle makers.
What are microscopes?
Microscopes are instruments that magnify objects too small to be seen.
Who discovered cells for the first time and how?
Robert Hook used a microscope to look at a thin slice of cork and saw cells for the first time.
What did Anton van Leeuwenhoek discover?
Anton van Leeuwenhoek discovered bacteria in tartar on teeth and microscopic animals in water.
What are the three types of microscopes?
Hand lens/ magnifying glass (5 - 20x magnification)
Light microscopes (40 - 2000x magnification)
Electron microscopes (up to 500 000x magnification)
What are the two types of electron microscopes?
Scanning electron microscope - 3D surface image
Transmission electron microscope - 2D images of cut sections)
How does an electron microscope work?
The object being viewed must be thinly coated in gold. Electrons are then fired at the object. Electrons bounce off the object and form an image on a computer.
What is an eye piece?
Lens which magnifies the object.
What is the tube?
It supports the eyepiece and connects it to the objective lens.
What is the coarse focus?
It is used for focusing on low power.
What is the fine focus?
It is used for focusing the specimen after the coarse focus is used.
What is the objective lens?
It magnifies the specimen.
What is the arm?
It is used to carry the microscope and supports the lenses.
What is the stage?
The stage supports the slide.
What is the diaphragm?
It controls the amount of light on the specimen.
