Setting up your microscope

A
  1. Ensure the microscope’s built-in light source is on. If not, adjust the mirror beneath the stage to direct light through the lens system.
  2. Lower the stage to its lowest position.
  3. Place a prepared slide at the center of the stage and secure it with the clips.
  4. Select the objective lens with the lowest magnification.
  5. Look through the eyepiece and use the coarse focus adjustment until cells on the slide are visible.
  6. Refine the focus with the fine focus adjustment for a clear view of the cells.
  7. If you want higher magnification, repeat the process with a higher magnification lens.

Making a slide

A
  1. Using the pipette, add a drop of water to the microscope slide
  2. Carfully peel off a thin piece of epidermal tissue from the inside of the onion using forceps
  3. Place the tissue on the microscope slide, making sure it is as flat as possible
  4. Add a drop of iodine to the onion tissue
  5. Carefully lower the cover slip onto the slide, ensuring there are no air bubbles
  6. Use the blotting paper to absorb any excess water or iodine solution
