Microscope quiz Flashcards
Base, arm, and head
The frame. The function of the frame is to support the various optical and mechanical parts the instrument
Ocular (eyepiece)
A lens to magnify the specimen’s image produced by the objective. The microscopes we use are binocular.
Ocular focusing ring (diopter adjustment ring)
Allows focusing of the two eyepiece lenses to achieve one image viewed with both eyes
Revolving nose
This is the part that holds two or more objective lenses and can be rotated to easily change power
Objective lenses
lenses that are positioned next to the object (specimen) that is to be magnified. The lens of the lowest magnification power, 4x on our microscopes, is also called the “scanning lens”; this is simply because one can use it to easily go about the specimen
Stage
A solid platform on which the specimen slide is place for observation
Stage clips
Hold the glass slide in place
Stage adjustment controls
Stage X-axis and Y-axis travel knobs, allowing horizontal and
movement of slide.
Condenser
A set of lenses that collect light from the illuminating source and concentrate it on the specimen slide.
Condenser aperture control
Lever that controls the size of the diaphragm opening, thereby
controlling the resolution and contrast
Illuminating source
The lamp, or source of light
Coarse focus knob
Controls up/down movement of the stage through long distances rapidly
Fine focus knob
Controls up/down movement of the stage through short distances slowly
Light intensity control:
Knob that controls the brightness of the light.
Power switch
Turns microscope on and off.
