Microorganisms Flashcards
What are saprobionts?
organisms that hydrolyse waste material and dead organic matter, through extracellular digestion
What is extracellular digestion also known as?
Saprobiotic nutrition
Describe the role of bacteria in ammonification
produce enzymes that hydrolyse proteins/urea/DNA/RNA in waste material, converting it into ammonium ions. (during extracellular digestion/soprabiotic nutrition)
What are the 4 types of microorganism involved in the nitrogen cycle?
- nitrogen fixing bacteria
- nitrifying bacteria
- denitrifying bacteria
- saprobionts
What is the plant and fungi complex called?
mycorrhizae
What bacteria converts N2 into NH4+?
nitrogen fixing
What is the specific name of the bacteria found in root nodules?
rhizobium
What do saprobionts break down?
nitrogen-containing compounds SUCH AS DNA/PROTEINS in waste/dead material
What is different about denitrifying bacteria?
they require anaerobic conditions to convert NO3 into N2
What bacteria are involved in ammonification?
saprobionts
What bacteria are involved in nitrification?
nitrifying
