Microbiology Physiology Flashcards
1
Q
General Purpose (AM)
A
- supports growth of typical bugs which do not have any specific growth requirements
2
Q
Nutrients required for growth
A
-Carbon, Nitrogen, Water, Trace elements
3
Q
Enrichment Media
A
- Contains substances such as horse blood or defined growth factors to support the growth of fastidious bugs
4
Q
Selective Media
A
- contains one or more agents that inhibit the growth of some microbes while allowing the growth of others
5
Q
Differential media
A
- shows differences between bugs i.e. has a pH indicator to differentiate bugs which produce acidic byproducts and those that do not or produce alkaline ones
6
Q
steps of Binary fission
A
- Cell growth; production of macromolecules and other cellular structures
- replication of DNA
- Division
Internal structures partition across where the septum is formed
7
Q
Budding
A
- Unequal cell division process
- Mother cell retains original form and new cell emerges from it
- internal structures must be formed within the new daughter cell
8
Q
Obligate Aerobes
A
- Require O2 for growth, grow at top of tube
- Aerobic respiration only
9
Q
Facultative anaerobes
A
- can grow without O2 but utilise it if available
- grow throughout the tube with a higher distribution towards the top
- aerobic/anaerobic and fermentation
10
Q
Aerotolerant Anaerobes
A
- do not use O2 for growth but are not harmed by its presence
- growth is even throughout the whole tube
- fermentation only
11
Q
Obligate Anaerobes
A
- are harmed by O2
- Grow at the bottom of the tube where O2 is absent
- anaerobic or fermentation
12
Q
Microaerophiles
A
- require O2 for growth but at levels sub-atmospheric pressure, found in the midsection of the tube
13
Q
Classification based on energy souce
A
chemotrophs (organo or litho)
or
Phototrops
14
Q
Classification based on carbon source
A
Autotrops; use Co2
or
Hetertrophs; use other organic compounds
