Q

Define antimicrobial resistance

A

Q

What are the three mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance?

A
  • Altered target site (such as modified binding proteins)
  • Enzymatic inactivation (enzymes either destroy antibiotics or alter to prevent binding)
  • Decreased uptake

Q

When seeking a second opinion on diagnosis, what is needed?

A
  • Prior to conversation ensure that all patient details are to hand
  • Ensure conversation is held in a place that doesn’t compromise patient confidentiality.
  • Summarise the significant points in the history
  • Supply a description of the pathology according to its anatomical location, structures involves and size of lesion (avoid non specific terms such as small/large)
  • Outline areas of specific concern, localised infection or systemic signs of infection, trismus, difficulty breathing, temperature etc
