Microbiology Flashcards
Microbiology
The study of small living things (viruses , fungus )
Bacteria
Larger than viruses. Simple single celled : no nucleus.
Divided into aerobes and anaerobes
Reproduce asexually
Aerobe
Need oxygen
Anaerobes
Do not need oxygen
Asexual
Clone, double every 20 minutes
In order to grow bacteria they need
Food
Water
Suitable temperature
Suitable PH
Soil bacteria
Break down (decompose) dead animal material to release nutrients into the soil
Uses of bacteria
Decay wastes
Make cheese and yogurt
Insulin and silage
Harmful Bacteria
Cause Disease
Food Spoilage
Tooth Decay
Fungi
Fungal cell similar to plant cell but does not posses chlorophyll (is not green and cannot make its own food)
Parasite
Obtain their food from feeding on other living organisms
Saprophyte
Obtain their food either from dead organisms or from their wastes
Fungi used in
Brewing, baking, making antibiotics and some are edible
Harmful fungi
Cause diseases in plants and animals, food spoilage and are poisonous
Viruses
Can only reproduce inside living things
They all cause disease
