Microbiology Flashcards
What are the differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes?
- Prokaryotes do not have a nucleus, Eukaryotes have a nucleus
- Prokaryotes do not have membrane-bound organelles, Eukaryotes have.
What microorganism belongs to prokaryotes?
Bacteria
What microorganisms belong to eukaryotes?
- Protists
- Fungi
- Animalia
- Plantae
What is the cell membrane of fungi made of?
Ergosterol
What are the 3 classifications of fungi?
- Mould
- Yeast
- Dimorphic fungi
Name 3 characteristics of yeasts
- Unicellular
- Divide by budding
- Grow best at 35 degrees C
Name 3 characteristics of mould
- Multicellular
- Divide by sporalation
- Grow at variable temperatures but best at room temperature
How are bacterium classified?
- Gram-positive
2. Gram-negative
What type of cell wall do gram-positive bacteria have and what color does it stain?
Peptidoglycan cell wall and stains purple
What type of cell wall do gram-negative bacteria have and what color does it stain?
A thin layer of peptidoglycan and a layer of lipoproteins. Stains pink
Why is bacterium stained?
- Helps to determine the cell wall composition
2. Help identify shape of bacteria
What function does a bacteria capsule serve?
- Inhibits phagocytosis
2. Aids in attachment to surfaces
What is the bacterium capsule made of?
Polysaccharides and polypeptides
What is the function of pili in bacteria?
Attachment to surfaces and genetic material exchange
What is the function of bacterial flagellum?
Movement
