Microbial growth Flashcards
What is mitosis?
Diploid division of cell. Hproducesthe exact copy and is considered asexualreproduction
What is meiosis?
Haploid division of cell.sexual reproduction
What is binary fission ?
Asexual reproduction. The cell grows then divides once it gets to about twice the size of it’s original size.
What is budding?
daughter cell that is produced asexually and unequally
How does the cell affectenvironment?
Products produced from metabolismcan have a negative or positive effect on the environment
How can the environment affect the cell?
Can either increase ordecrease growth’ environmental factors include: temperature, pH, osmotic pressure/moisture, substrate availability
How does the cold affect amicrobe?
It slows down the growth.h does not kill it, it preserves it.
What are acidophiles?
Microbes that grow in pH levelsless than 7 . In acidic environment.
What are obligate aerobes?
They need O2 and have the enzymes needed to process toxic oxygen products
Facultative organism?
. It is an iorganism thatcan stillgrow even without oxygen.
What are microaerophiles?
Only requires a small amount of oxygen. Doesn’t grow at normal atmospheric oxygen levels Hdoes have enzymes that will process toxic oxygen by products
What are strict or obligate aerobes?
This doesn’t use oxygen in its metabolism.it will die with oxygen because it doesn’t have theenzymes required to process toxic oxygen byproducts.
What are aerotolarent anaerobes?
Doesn’t use oxygen in its metabolism, but it does have the . enzymes to process toxic oxygen byproducts
Osmophiles?
Live in habitats with a high solute concentration
Xerophiles
Lives in very dry environments
