Microbial Diseases Flashcards
Vector
DNA molecule used to artificially carry foreign genetic material into another cell, where it can be replicated
Primary host
an organism in which the parasite reaches the adult stage and reproduces sexually, if possible.
Secondary host
an organism that harbors the sexually immature parasite and is required by the parasite to undergo development and complete its life cycle. (Vector)
Malaria
A disease caused by a plasmodium parasite, transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes.
TB (tuberculosis)
A potentially serious infectious bacterial disease that mainly affects the lungs.
HIV
HIV causes AIDS and interferes with the body’s ability to fight infections.
Thrush
A fungal infection typically on the skin or mucous membranes caused by candida.
Retrovirus
a type of virus that inserts a copy of its RNA genome into the DNA of a host cell that it invades, thus changing the genome of that cell.
Opportunistic infections
infections that occur more often or are more severe in people with weakened immune systems than in people with healthy immune systems.
Prophylaxis
treatment given or action taken to prevent disease.
