Microbes Flashcards
1
Q
What are differences between archea and bacteria?
A
1- different cell walls : most archea do not have peptidoglycan
2- Unique cell membrane: archea lipids are ether bon (not ester bound) and branched
3- unique metabolism: archea don’t use glycolysis or krebs cycle
2
Q
What are the main archeal functions?
A
- Methanogens
- Ammonia oxidizers (catalyze reactions from NH4=> NO3)
- Denitrifiers ( responsible for some steps in denitrification that produce NO and N2O
3
Q
What are differences between Gram + and Gram -
A
Gram +:
- Purple
- No outer layer
- Big peptidoglycan
- ex: firmicutes, bacillus, listeria
Gram -:
- Pink
- Outer membrane
- Peptidoglycan
- Much more common
- Cell is less rigid
4
Q
What is the differences between photo and chemo trophes?
A
Photo= energy from liight Chemo= energy from breaking chemical bounds
5
Q
What is the difference between litho and organo trophs?
A
Litho= inorganic
Organo= organic source of carbon
6
Q
What are some impacts of viruses?
A
- many plant viral pahtogens are soil-brone
- Exert control on microbial population sized and turnover and thus influence rate of many mircobial processes
