Microbes Flashcards
What do some bacteria form endospores?
In response to nutrient deprivation.
How are viruses classified?
On the basis of morphology, chemical composition and mode of replication.
How do viruses replicate?
Viruses depend on their host cells protein synthesis pathway to reproduce.
What is an opportunistic pathogen?
Organisms that can become pathogenic following a perturbation to their host.
What is a opportunistic infection?
An infection caused by an organism that does not normally cause disease.
What are some issues related to the presence of fungi?
There are lots of different infections fungi can cause for example, ringworm.
What are some issues related to ectoparasites?
There are many health problems that are related to ectoparasites that include tissue damage, irritation and inflammation.
What are some common signs and symptoms of disease?
Fever, Diarrhoea, Fatigue, Muscle aches and coughing.
What is a communicable disease?
An illness that spread from person to person, from a animal to person or from a food/Surface to person. Example salmonella.
What is a non communicable disease?
A disease that is not spread through infection or people but from unhealthy behaviour. Example diabetes.
What is a contagious disease?
A disease that is spread from person to person, example step throat.
What are the various reservoirs of infection?
Humans, animals and the environment.
What is a portal of entry and exit?
A way of transmission on all body surfaces, the blood stream or through a bite.
How are microorganisms transmitted?
Direct contact, fomites, aerosol, oral and vector borne.
Define epidemiology
The study of the distribution and determinants of health related events in specified populations.
