How do fungi reproduce?
They reproduce through budding
They grow another fungus on their side which pops off when it is fully formed.
What are some examples of fungi?
Bread mold
Yeast
Penicillin
Where are algae found and what are they usually used for?
They’re found in oceans and fresh water and are used as a thickening agent
What are some examples of algae?
Phytoplankton and Spirogyra
How do viruses reproduce?
They take over other cells to make them produce viruses
What are some examples of viruses
Flu, polio, common cold, and bacteriophages (they kill bacteria)
What is the definition of a microorganism?
Micro organisms are tiny living creature which can only be seen by using a microscope.
What is agar used for?
Agar is used to grow microbes as it gives food and nutrients to grow.
How do you prepare agar?
It needs to be sterilised by heating it to high temperatures.
What are aseptic techniques
They ensure we don’t contaminate our plates or the surrounding environment.
What are some examples of aseptic techniques?
- Wash hands with disinfectant/soap/ etc
- Place things like swabs in disinfectant
- Ensure equipment is sterile
- Tie up your hair
