Disease And Antibodies Flashcards
What is the definition of disease?
“A disease is an abnormal condition/disorder that can affect either all or part of an organism”
How can diseases be spread?
Droplets
Airborne
Direct contact
Indirect contact
Fecal-Oral
What is the bodies first line of defence?
Barrier
What are some examples of the body’s first line of defence?
Skin
Stomach acid
Mucus
What is the second line of defence?
Its a non-specific approach to destroying microorganisms using macrophage (white blood cells)
How does the second line of defence work?
Viruses are absorbed by the white blood cell
Enzymes then break down the virus
Waste material is then ejected.
What is the last line of defence?
Antibodies produced by our white blood cells
What are some pros and cons of the third line of defence?
Antibodies are incredibly effective
A new type is required every time the outer proteins mutate
What are antibiotics used for?
Antibiotics are used to treat or prevent some types of bacterial infection. They kill bacteria or prevent them from reproducing and spreading.
What are some pros and cons of antibiotics?
Pros:
Highly effective
Easy to administer
Not many side effects
Cons:
People can be allergic
They are overused
Bacteria may be immune
