Michelangelo's The Last Judgement Flashcards
In the original painting everyone except from Mary and Jesus are naked
This shows that in the Last Judgement all people are equal before God
Near to Jesus are some saints who are holding tools that were used to torture and kill them.Depite their torture, the saints are shown to have perfect bodies
Reflects the Catholic belief that people’s bodies will be resurrected ( as well as their souls ) and made perfect
People are rising from their graves
Showing that all people will be raised up for judgement on the last day
Here people are shown moving towards hell , with a sense of despair
Hell is shown as a place of darkness.Reflects the idea that the light of Christ can’t reach people who rejected God
The wounds feom Jesus’ crucifixion are still visible showing
That Jesus came to glory through obedience and suffering
One of the angles is holding a small book filled with names with those raised to heaven, while another is holding a much larger book filled with those who are destined to go to hell
Reflects Jesus’ teaching that no one should be complacent and assume they will be raised up to heaven
The Last Judgement by Michelangelo depicts this event which is known as the
Final Judgement
Catholics believe at the end of time, wveryone will be resurrected and judged by Christ .
Thisnjudgement confirms whether the rest of eternity in heaven or hell
Due to the sanctity of Life the Church teaches that
All human life is holy and sacred. All Life shouls be therefore respected and valued.Life does not become any less valuable when a person becomes ill or elderly
All life belongs to God.If anyone intentionally dmabes or destroys a human
Life then they are rejecting God’s gift
People have a duty to give the ill and elderly all the care and support they need to maintain
Their dignity until they die.
Euthanasia desceibes a situationn where
Soemone intentionally helps another person to die in order to ens suffering
Why is the Church against euthanasia
Considered to be murder and morally unacceptable.
Suffering can be seen as a way to share in suffering of Jesus on the cross.
Suffering is a part of being human but may be reduced with medication.
Lowers the value and dignity of life - all life should be valued and respected , even if a person is ill and suffering
