MG Flashcards
Define burst of fire
The number of successive rounds fired with the same elevation and point of aim when the trigger is held to the rear
Define max ordinance
Highest point round reaches, 2/3 of way to target
Come of fire
Pattern of rounds
Effects
-vibration, ammo, atmospheric conditions
Beaten zone
Elliptical pattern on ground/target by striking of rounds
- oval/cigar shape
- density decreases towards edges
- 85%
Characteristics of beaten zone
500m - 1x110m
1000m - 2x75m
1500m - 3x55m
2000m - 4x50m
Danger space
Distance between muzzle to target
- trajectory rises less than 1.8m (average height) above ground, including beaten zone
Classes of machine gun fire
- Respect to ground
- Respect to target
- Respect to gun
Respect to ground
Grazing fire: cone of fire 1m off ground, 600m
Plunging fire: danger space is within beaten zone
- loss of grazing fife at any point of trajectory
Respect to target
- Frontal: long axis beaten zone @ right angle
- Flanking: side of target
- Oblique: longer axis at angle other than right angle (diagonal)
- Enfilade:when the long axis of the beaten zone coincide or nearly coincide with the long axis of the target
Respect to weapon (6)
- Fixed: delivered against stationary target
- width/depth of beaten zone cover target - Traversing: width by successive direction
- Search: successive changes in elevation
- Searching/traversing: successive change in direction/depth
- Swinging traverse: major change in direction, little to no change in elevation
- Free gun: major change in direction/elevation
Rates of fire
- Sustained: normal rate of fire
- Rapid: high volume
- Cyclic: most ammo in 1 min
- trigger held to rear
