MOA?
Diffuses into the cell then reduced to a free radical under anaerobic conditions interfering with the organisms DNA causing breakage, destabilisation and cell death
Bacteriostatic or bacteriocidal?
Bacteriocidal
What bacteria are they used against?
Anaerobes and some protozoa (giardia), kills campylobacter some clostridia
What conditions is it used for?
Inflammatory bowel disease and enteric infections
What drug is it used in combination with to treat periodontal disease in dogs?
Spiramycin
Resistance?
Antinomyces may be resistant
What are they not useful against?
Aerobes and microaerophiles
Describe absorption, distribution and elimination?
A - moderately lipophilic and well absorbed in GIT tract
D - well in CNS, bone, seminal fluid and even pus-filled cavities
E - urine
Adverse effects?
Can cause GIT upset - stomatitis
Can see neurological toxicity: ataxia, nystagmus, head tilt, rolling over and over
