Excreted mainly by the lungs. By the liver

Primary emergency indications
A
- pain relief

Contraindications
A
- pre-existing renal disease (previously diagnosed renal impairment or failure, kidney stones and/or renal colic are not contraindications)
- Known or genetic susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia

Precautions
A
- the inhaler must be hand-held by the patients so that if unconsciousness occurs it will fall from the patient’s face.
- pre-eclampsia
- concurrent use with oxytocin may cause hypotension

Route of administration
A
Self-administration under supervision using penthrox inhaler

Side effects
A
- drowsiness
- decrease in BP and bradycardia (rare)
- exceeding the maximum total dose of 6ml in a 24hr period may lead to renal toxicity
