Methods of Purification Flashcards
What is sublimation?
It is a process of when solids are heated and immediately turn into a gas without the transition into liquid (e.g dry ice)
What is filtration?
It is a process that is used between insoluble and soluble liquids
What is decanting?
It is a process that is used between insoluble and soluble liquids but it’s for bigger particles(filtration is the preferred method
What is magnetic separation?
Its a method between substances for magnetic and non-magnetic particles
What is a separating funnel?
Its a method for immiscible liquids(not related to the density at all)
What is a simple distillation?
Its a process usually used to separate components that has widely different boiling points
What is fractional distillation?
Its a process used to separate liquids with very close boiling points
What is evaporation to dryness?
It’s a process where all liquid is evaporated into a powdery form(but only for thermally stable concentrations)
- do note that non-thermally stable concentrations would just turn into black decomposed compounds
What is crystillisation?
It’s a process for non-thermally stable liquids where the liquids are boiled down until the very saturated liquid is formed and waited to cool and form crystals
what is chromatography
It’s a process where substances are judged by the Rf value
