Atomis structure Flashcards
What is the outermost shell and electrons called?
valence shell, valence electron
What is the relative mass of protons neutrons and electrons?
1, 1 and negligible(too small of a number) respectively
What is the relative charge of protons neutrons and electrons?
+1, 0, -1
Are atoms electrically neutral?
Yes, as there is an equal. number of protons and electrons
Why is the mass concentrated on the nucleus?
Because the mass of an electron is very small compared to the nucleus
What’s the difference between absolute mass and atomic mass?
Atomic mass is more accurate, practical and convenient to work with integers as a whole since atoms have such a small mass. (Absolute mass is protons+electrons+neutrons)
What are octlet and duplet configuration?
Octlet is when the atom is stable with a full valence shell(8) while duplet is when there are 2 valence electrons in the valence shell
Relationship between the atom and where on the PT
No. of valence electrons = which grp
No. of electron shells = which period
what are ions?
They are stable atoms with either a negative or positive charge
What does the difference of electrons cause?
There would be chemical changes( atom would be stable)
What are isotopes?
They are atoms with a different number of neutrons
What difference do the neutrons cause?
Though chemical changes would be the same, physical properties would differ. the number of neutrons varies, affecting …
- mass number changes
- density, rate of diffusion, diff boiling points
