What are the four ways in which production can be organised?
Job production, batch production, mass or flow production, cell production
What is job production?
When individual products are made one at a time to meet specific customer preferences.
What are advantages of job production?
- product is high quality
- orders are customised so there is more customer satisfaction
- higher job satisfaction because employees are dedicated to the product
What are disadvantages of job production?
- production costs are likely to be higher
-production time may be longer - investment in machinery may be more expensive because specialist equipment is needed
What is batch production?
When a group of identical products are produced simultaneously rather than one at a time. The manufacturer decides how big and how often the batch is made.
What are advantages of batch production?
-allows flexible production
-better quality control
What are disadvantages of batch production?
- making many small batches can be expensive
-longer lead time
What is flow production?
A continuous production is created in a series of stages.
What are advantages of flow production?
- short lead times
- cheaper operating costs
- low labour skills needed
What are disadvantages of flow production?
.lack of customisation
. High set up costs
. Less motivated staff
What is cell production?
Workers being organised into multi-skilled teams with each team responsible for a different part of the production process.
What are advantages of cell production?
- enhanced quality
- increased efficiency
- reduced lead times
What are disadvantages of cell production?
- expensive machinery
- productions lines are expensive to set up
