METHODS OF EXAMINATION Flashcards
inspection
using visualization to detect physical data. This includes the general physical examination, posture, mannerisms, grooming, gait, visible injuries, rashes, color changes, and deformities or asymmetries.
palpation
examination using touch. Palpation may allow the examiner to feel the surface of the body or to press deeper and palpate internal organs. Pulses would be evaluated using this method of examination.
percussion
using the method of tapping or striking to hear sounds or feel vibrations. It can be used to evaluate the abdominal organs or the lungs.
auscultation
listening to sounds of the body. An example of this would be using the stethoscope to listen to the apical pulse.
mensuration
the process of measuring. This would include characteristics such as recording height, weight, or the size of a wound.
