Methods and Measurements Flashcards
What is random error?
present in all types of measurements and shifts measurements in unpredictable ways
What is precision?
measure of how closely individual measurements of the same value agree with each other
What is systematic error?
shifts all measurements in a standardized way
What are experimental studies?
scientists manipulate one or more variables in order to observe the outcome
What are observational studies?
scientists observe variables without manipulating them
What are positive controls?
groups in which an effect is expected because scientists manipulate them in a way that is already known to produce an effect
What are negative controls?
groups in which no effect is expected
